The city of Doral is named for the famous golf and spa resort located within its municipal boundaries. It was originally built by Doris and Alfred Kaskel. They named it "Doral"; a combination of Doris and Alfred. Doral was incorporated along with Miami Gardens in 2003. As of the 2000 census, the population was 20,438. According to the 2005 U.S. Census estimates, the city had a population of 21,895.

With a population of 105,414, it is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County (after Miami and Hialeah). The city is located in North-Central Miami Dade County and covers an area of approximately 20 square miles. The City, with a central location midway between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, it is easily accessed by I-95, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Florida Turnpike. It has rail access through the Florida East Coast Railway and the South Florida Tri-Rail System. Miami Gardens is a solid, working and middle class community of unique diversity. The City is also home to Florida Memorial College, Calder Race Track, Dolphins Stadium (used by the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Marlins), and Chapel at St. Thomas University.
